ABC Institute is an approved apprenticeship program provider of the Florida Department of Education, Department of Labor and the Department of Veteran Affairs, Benefit Division.

We currently offer open enrollment on the Electrical, Fire Sprinkler, HVAC, Linemen, and Plumbing trades; coming soon Carpentry and Low Voltage programs. Experienced individuals may request to test out up to 50% of the apprenticeship program.  Other training is available for many of the construction crafts.



Can a contractor enroll existing employees in the program?

Yes! Contractors can enroll existing employees in the program.

Can individuals who were in a program but terminate be reinstated?
Yes!

Where and when are classes held?

Most classes are held in the evening in Miami, Broward, Palm Beach, and in the Space Coast areas.

How long is the program?

Most programs are 4 years long.  Contact our office for the specific length of the trade.

What is an apprentice paid?
First year apprentices start at 40 to 50 percent of the established journeyman's wages and receive 5 percent increases every six months thereafter. On Davis-Bacon or most government jobs, the apprentice must be paid his proper percentage rate applied to the prevailing wage determined for the particular job.

Are apprentices’ paid to attend class?

No!  However, an annual administrative fee that averages to $13.00 per week is paid by the employer.

Who oversees the program?

Each trade has its own committee and is made up of participating contractors. They meet quarterly and monitor the progress of apprentices.  ABC Institute staff members administer the programs.

What is the ratio requirement?
Currently a contractor may have 1 apprentice for the shop and 1 for every 3 journeyman thereafter. A contractor must have 4 journeymen to have 2 apprentices and 7 to have 3 apprentices.

What are the minimum qualifications for apprentice applicants?

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Provide proof of residency with a driver's license or Florida identification and residency card if applicable
  • Be physically able to perform the work of the trade as detailed in the job description
  • All Students must provide a Social Security card.
