DENVER, Colorado – November 6, 2015 - The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) has recognized Hensel Phelps with the Design-Build Project of the Year award for the Benjamin P. Grogan and Jerry L. Dove Federal Building in Miramar, Florida. Hensel Phelps took home a total of five awards for this project at the DBIA National Awards dinner, including a National Award of Merit, National Award of Excellence (Federal, County, State, Municipal), Excellence in Process, Excellence in Design (Architecture) and the aforementioned Project of the Year.

As a 2015 National Award of Merit winner in the Federal, County, State, Municipal category, this building was eligible for consideration for the Project of the Year award, the DBIA’s highest honor. Award recipients must demonstrate effective schedule and cost performance and exemplify the principles of effective processes, interdisciplinary teamwork, problem-solving, and excellence in design.

“To win a National Design-Build Project/Team Award, projects must not only achieve budget and schedule goals, but also demonstrate advanced and innovative application of design-build best practices,” said Lisa Washington, CAE, and Executive Director/CEO of DBIA. “This year’s winning projects exemplify Design-Build Done Right in their design-build process, excellence in design, and extraordinary teaming performance. The jury’s difficulty in choosing winners demonstrates how much design-build expertise has expanded since we started the awards program in 1996.”

Hensel Phelps completed this 383,000-square-foot project for the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) in December 2014, consolidating 12 South Florida federal agency offices into one four-building campus environment near the Everglades. This project included enhanced security specifications, an enclosed parking structure, and multiple buildings on a 20-acre site. It was designed and built to be LEED Platinum Core and Shell (C&S) certified, LEED Gold Commercial Interiors (CI) certified, and Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) Two Star certified.

Hensel Phelps would like to thank their entire project team, including GSA, Jacobs, Gensler, Krueck+Sexton, Atkins, Walter P. Moore, Syska Hennessy, Enclos, John J. Kirlin and M.C. Dean.

Hensel Phelps is a premier full-service facilities solutions provider with close to 80 years of experience planning, building and managing facilities in nearly every building sector, with locations throughout the United States and over 2,500 employees.

Facchina Construction Named Contractor to Build Two-Acre Development in Historic Overtown

From L to R: Charles Arean (Senior Project Manager – Facchina Construction), Jorge Fuentes (Project Manager – All Aboard Florida), JC Freyre (Vice President of Construction – All Aboard Florida), Jesus R. Vazquez (Chief Operating Officer – Facchina Construction of Florida), Andres Rodriguez (Project Executive – Facchina Construction), and Carlos Padron (Assistant Project Manager – Facchina Construction).

Coral Gables, FL (September 2, 2015) – Reaching another milestone in its development of MiamiCentral, All Aboard Florida recently closed on a two-acre parcel in Historic Overtown at NW 2nd Ave and NW 6th Street. The planned development clears the way for 3 MiamiCentral, a multi-use complex that will enhance and support the main nine-acre station and serve as a multimodal gateway accessing All Aboard Florida, Tri-Rail, Metrorail, Metromover and Metrobus.

From initial discussions about the mobility system and design of urban living spaces, All Aboard Florida has worked closely with the South East Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (SEOPW CRA).

“Working with the Overtown CRA to finalize this transaction is another big step in the development of the MiamiCentral Station Complex and its multimodal system – all ahead of schedule,” said Mike Reininger, president of All Aboard Florida. “Since the start of our project, we’ve been committed to growing the economy of Overtown and creating more than 400 jobs directly or through our partners.”

All Aboard Florida has selected Facchina Construction of Florida to perform pre-construction and construction-management services for the project. Construction activities will begin later this year, and sub-contractor and career opportunities will be announced in coming months.

“We are truly looking forward to working with All Aboard Florida and earning their trust and confidence as a builder and contractor that they can depend on,” said Jesus R. Vazquez, chief operating officer of Facchina Construction of Florida.

The twelve-story, 3 MiamiCentral complex will house more than 130,000 square feet of Class A commercial office and retail space. One of its first tenants will be All Aboard Florida, which will relocate its corporate headquarters to the new site from Coral Gables once work is completed. The centerpiece of the complex will be a mural by Miami-based sculptor and visual artist Robert McKnight.

Addressing the food desert issue that has plagued Overtown for many years, 3 MiamiCentral will feature a national grocer. Off-site parking for the Lyric Theatre is also being incorporated in the complex.

“I'm excited to see this project moving forward and continuing to spur job creation and economic investment in Historic Overtown and downtown Miami,” said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Audrey Edmonson (District 3 – Overtown, El Portal, Liberty City, Miami Shores). "This is one of several developments that will truly be a catalyst for transforming Overtown into a sustainable community where people can live, work and play.”

Other partners working on 3 MiamiCentral are AECOM, a global provider of professional, technical and management support services in transportation and other markets, which is designing the complex, and Miami-based Design2Form, which is serving as design consultant and bringing first-hand knowledge of the robust history and culture of Overtown to the project. The complex is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2017, and expected to achieve LEED Silver certification.

All Aboard Florida is an intercity passenger-rail project being developed by Florida East Coast Industries, owner of Florida’s premier passenger rail corridor. When launched in 2017, the service will connect Miami to Orlando, with intermediate stations in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, in just under three hours. This rail service will provide residents and visitors with a viable transportation alternative to congested highways and crowded airports, and passengers with a high‐quality onboard experience. All Aboard Florida will be the only privately-owned-and-operated passenger-rail service in the United States. For more information, visit www.AllAboardFlorida.com.

As Advanced Roofing Inc. (ARI) adds jobs and expands statewide; the fast-growing company has received top statewide roofing industry honors. ARI ranks as the number one commercial roofing contractor in Florida for the fourth consecutive year -- and fourteenth in the U.S. – in national magazine Roofing Contractor’s just-published annual ranking.

Also this summer, ARI won the Florida Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association’s 2015 S.T.A.R. Award for the best roofing project in Florida, in recognition of the contractor’s work on the University of Miami (UM) Frost School of Music building in Coral Gables. ARI also earned FRSA’s first-place Sustainability Award for that project, based on its waterproofing, and solar work. In addition, ARI won top honors in the FRSA’s Low Slope category, for the Southeast Financial Center re-roofing in downtown Miami.

With seven branches throughout Florida, a staff of 300 and more than $71 million in revenue for 2014, Advanced Roofing leads the industry as the highest-earning commercial roofing contractor in the State of Florida. Roofing Contractor magazine’s ranking, which is based solely on revenues, reflects the upswing in the roofing industry as a whole, including new construction and re-roofing markets, according to ARI President and CEO Robert Kornahrens. Targeting 20 percent revenue growth in 2015, Fort Lauderdale-based ARI this year expanded into the Tampa Bay market and plans to hire 30 additional employees by year-end, Kornahrens said.

The FRSA awards for the UM Frost School of Music building were based on overcoming challenges with roofing, waterproofing and solar array in construction of a new building last year on an active college campus. Challenges included maintaining stringent safety policies and precautions, and coordination among other trades. The Frost School of Music project is seeking Leadership in Environmental Energy and Design (LEED) Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and would be the first in the City of Coral Gables to achieve that environmental honor.

The Frost School of Music’s completed solar arrays, which include 286 solar panels, are expected to offset 13 percent of the structure’s total energy consumption, producing 101.344 Megawatt hours annually. The solar racking system helped the building qualify for two LEED points in the energy efficiency category. General contractor for the project was Skanska.USA, and award-winning architects Yann Weymouth and HOK designed the facility.

As Miami’s second tallest building, fully-occupied in a bustling downtown area, the Southeast Financial Center re-roofing project encountered its own set of unique challenges recognized with the Low Slope honor. The biggest challenge was removing tear-off debris and loading materials onto the 56th floor. Other challenges included updating the building’s antenna, safety railing and lighting protection systems; and scheduling work at night to adhere to noise ordinances.
